The North area covers the North East, North West and Yorkshire and Humber regions. Currently Apples and Snakes' focus is on the North East, where part-time Programme Co-ordinator Kirsten Luckins has been developing work over the past four years.

To see events taking place in the North, see Events or go to Artist Development if you are a spoken word artist in the area. The current programme and artist development offer includes:

  • Supporting established spoken word promoters in the North East to programme performances from poets outside the region, for example at the regular Jibba Jabba night at the Cumberland Arms in Newcastle.

  • Facilitating the monthly Scratch Club in Newcastle, which is a space for spoken word artists at all levels to receive critical feedback on new work.

  • Running other projects and events designed to respond to the needs of local poets by improving their professional skills, providing progression routes and performance opportunities.

  • One-to-one advice and guidance sessions from Kirsten about your own practice and aspirations as a poet.

  • Producing a monthly e-newsletter called Snakebasket, which includes highlights of the Apples and Snakes programme alongside information about other poetry events and projects in the area, space permitting.

In the North West, Apples and Snakes is running Hit the Ode Manchester at Contact in Manchester, in partnership with Ben Mellor featuring local, national and international artists plus open-mic. Hit the Ode Manchester is modelled on our long-running Birmingham night, with the same national and international artists programmed.

Apples and Snakes' activities in the Yorkshire and Humber region have so far been limited; with involvement in national projects such as Shake the Dust and one-off events including Mouthy Poets on Tour in association with Apples and Snakes. The organisation is also currently supporting the development Grandad And The Machine by spoken word artist Jack Dean, who is based in the region.
